धनु स्मपै माइआ झूठी अंति छोडि चलिआ पछुताई ॥

ਦੁਨਿਆਵੀ

ਧੰਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ। ਬੇਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰਾ ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਛੱਡਣ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੇਗਾਂ।
This wealth, property and Maya are false. In the end, you must leave these, and depart in sorrow.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥

जिस

नो किरपा करे गुरु मेले सो हरि हरि नामु समालि ॥

ਜਿਸ

ਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਮਿਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਰ ਹਰ ਨਾਂਮ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Those whom the Lord, in His Mercy, unites with the Guru, reflect upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਦੋਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਚੋਥੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਬ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Lord announces the time of departure.

ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਸਭ ਚਲੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਦੀ ॥

करि

सेवहु पूरा सतिगुरू वणजारिआ मित्रा सभ चली रैणि विहादी ॥

ਦੋਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਂਮ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਰਾਤ ਵਾਂਗ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਜਾਂ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
Serve the Perfect True Guru, O my merchant friend; your entire life-night is passing away.

ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਢਿਲ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਹੋਵਹੁ ॥

हरि

सेवहु खिनु खिनु ढिल मूलि न करिहु जितु असथिरु जुगु जुगु होवहु ॥

ਸਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ। ਕੋਈ ਆਲਸ ਨਾਂ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਹਰ ਜਗ੍ਹਾਂ ਹਰ ਸਮੇਂ ਜੀਵੇਗਾਂ।
Serve the Lord each and every instant-do not delay! You shall become eternal throughout the ages.

सेती सद माणहु रलीआ जनम मरण दुख खोवहु ॥

ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਅੰਨਦ ਮਾਣ, ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
Enjoy ecstasy forever with the Lord, and do away with the pains of birth and death.

ਗੁਰੂ

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਪਿਆਰ ਅੰਨਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
Know that there is no difference between the Guru, the True Guru, and your Lord and Master. Meeting with Him, take pleasure in the Lord's devotional service.

मासी मानसु कीआ वणजारिआ मित्रा करि मुहलति करम कमाहि ॥

ਦੋਸਤ ਦਸੀਂ ਮਹੀਨੀ ਮੁੱਨਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਆ ਗਿਆ। ਕੰਮ ਲੇਖਾਂ ਜੋਖਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਮਰ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਤੀ।
In the tenth month, you were made into a human being, O my merchant friend, and you were given your allotted time to perform good deeds.

ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Muhalath Kar Dheenee Karam Kamaanae Jaisaa Likhath Dhhur Paaeiaa ||

करि दीनी करम कमाणे जैसा लिखतु धुरि पाइआ ॥

ਉਮਰ

ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਬੰਨ ਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਾਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਿਛਲਾ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
You were given this time to perform good deeds, according to your pre-ordained destiny.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਤਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੰਜੋਇਆ ॥

मात

पिता भाई सुत बनिता तिन भीतरि प्रभू संजोइआ ॥

ਮਾਂ

, ਬਾਪ, ਭਰਾ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੇ ਪਤਨੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਬ ਨੇ ਸਯੋਗ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
God placed you with your mother, father, brothers, sons and wife.

ਕਰਮ ਸੁਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਇਸੁ ਜੰਤੈ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

करम

सुकरम कराए आपे इसु जंतै वसि किछु नाहि ॥

ਚੰਗ੍ਹੇ

ਮਾੜੇ ਲੇਖ ਆਪੇ ਰੱਬ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਕੁੱਝ ਵੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
God Himself is the Cause of causes, good and bad-no one has control over these things.

ਦੋਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁਵਾਨੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the fullness of youth rises in you like waves.

ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਾ ਅਹੰਮੇਇ ॥

बुरा

भला न पछाणई वणजारिआ मित्रा मनु मता अहमेइ ॥

ਵਿਪਾਰੀ

ਦੋਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਜੋਸ਼ ਹੰਕਾਂਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾੜਾਂ ਚੰਗ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ।
You do not distinguish between good and evil, O my merchant friend-your mind is intoxicated with ego.

ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਗੈ ਪੰਥੁ ਕਰਾਰਾ ॥

बुरा

भला न पछाणै प्राणी आगै पंथु करारा ॥

ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ

ਵਿੱਚ ਵਧੀਆ ਮਾੜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ। ਅੱਗਲੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਰਨ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਦਾ ਰੱਸਤਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾਂ ਹੈ।
Mortal beings do not distinguish between good and evil, and the road ahead is treacherous.

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰਾ ॥

पूरा

सतिगुरु कबहूं न सेविआ सिरि ठाढे जम जंदारा ॥

ਪੂਰਾ

ਸੱਚਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੇਤੇ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰ ਮੌਤ ਜਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹੈ।
They never serve the Perfect True Guru, and the cruel tyrant Death stands over their heads.

राइ जब पकरसि बवरे तब किआ जबाबु करेइ ॥

ਜਦੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਛੇਗਾ। ਜੀਵ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਕੀ ਜੁਆਬ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ?
When the Righteous Judge seizes you and interrogates you, O madman, what answer will you give him then?

तीजै

पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा बिखु संचै अंधु अगिआनु ॥

ਵਿਪਾਰੀ

ਦੋਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੱਕਲ ਤੋਂ ਵਗੈਰ ਨਾਂ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧੰਨ ਇੱਕਠਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison.

ਪੁਤ੍ਰਿ ਕਲਤ੍ਰਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਲਪਟਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਲੋਭਾਨੁ ॥

Puthr Kalathr Mohi Lapattiaa Vanajaariaa Mithraa Anthar Lehar Lobhaan ||

पुत्रि

कलत्रि मोहि लपटिआ वणजारिआ मित्रा अंतरि लहरि लोभानु ॥

ਦੋਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਔਰਤ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਭ ਨਾਲ ਮੱਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੂਝਦਾ ਹੈ
He is entangled in emotional attachment to his wife and sons, O my merchant friend, and deep within him, the waves of greed are rising up.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਲੋਭਾਨੁ ਪਰਾਨੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

Anthar Lehar Lobhaan Paraanee So Prabh Chith N Aavai ||

अंतरि

लहरि लोभानु परानी सो प्रभु चिति न आवै ॥

ਜੀਵ

ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਭ ਨਾਲ ਮੱਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੂਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
The waves of greed are rising up within him, and he does not remember God.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਆ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

साधसंगति

सिउ संगु न कीआ बहु जोनी दुखु पावै ॥

ਰੱਬ

ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ। ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਜਨਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
He does not join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and he suffers in terrible pain through countless incarnations.

ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

विसारिआ सुआमी इक निमख न लगो धिआनु ॥

ਜਨਮਦਾਤਾ

ਪ੍ਰੁਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਕ ਭੋਰਡ ਵੀ ਲਿਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਈ।
He has forgotten the Creator, his Lord and Master, and he does not meditate on Him, even for an instant.

कहु

नानक प्राणी तीजै पहरै बिखु संचे अंधु अगिआनु ॥३॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਕੱਲ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਗੈਰ, ਨਾਂ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧੰਨ ਇੱਕਠਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Says Nanak, in the third watch of the night, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison. ||3||

ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥

Chouthhai Peharai Rain Kai Vanajaariaa Mithraa Dhin Naerrai Aaeiaa Soe ||

चउथै

पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा दिनु नेड़ै आइआ सोइ ॥

ਵਿਪਾਰੀ

ਦੋਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਚੌਥੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਨੇੜੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ।
In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, that day is drawing near.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੇਲੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

Guramukh Naam Samaal Thoon Vanajaariaa Mithraa Thaeraa Dharageh Baelee Hoe ||

गुरमुखि

नामु समालि तूं वणजारिआ मित्रा तेरा दरगह बेली होइ ॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ

ਨਾਂਮ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵਿਪਾਰੀ ਦੋਸਤ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਂਮ ਹੀ ਅੱਗੇ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਏ, ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਆਵੇਗਾ।
As Gurmukh, remember the Naam, O my merchant friend. It shall be your Friend in the Court of the Lord.

नामु समालि पराणी अंते होइ सखाई ॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ
ਨਾਂਮ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਕੇ ਇੱਕਠਾਂ ਕਰ। ਜੋ ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
As Gurmukh, remember the Naam, O mortal; in the end, it shall be your only companion.
