जाणै आपणे धीआ पूत संजोगु ॥

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ

ਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਧੀਆ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਪਿੱਛਲੇ ਦੇਣੇ ਲੈਣੇ ਦਾ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ ਹਨ।
The self-willed manmukh looks upon his daughters, sons and relatives as his own.

ਨਾਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਾਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

देखि विगासीअहि नाले हरखु सु सोगु ॥

ਔਰਤ

ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਪਰਚਾਉਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਦੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਹੱਸਦਾ ਕਦੇ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਵੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Gazing upon his wife, he is pleased. But along with happiness, they bring grief.

सबदि रंगावले अहिनिसि हरि रसु भोगु ॥३॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਨਾਂਮ ਰਾਮ

, ਹਰੀ, ਸਤਿਨਾਂਮ,ਅੱਲਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਰਲ ਕੇ, ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਰਲ ਕੇ, ਉਹੀ ਰੱਬੀ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਰੱਬੀ ਅੰਨਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ||3||

The Gurmukhs are attuned to the Word of the Shabad. Day and night, they enjoy the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3||

ਚਿਤੁ ਚਲੈ ਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਵਣੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥

चितु

चलै वितु जावणो साकत डोलि डोलाइ ॥

ਜਦੋ

ਕੋਈ ਵਸਤੂ ਖੁਸ, ਗੁਆਚ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਘਬਰਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The consciousness of the wicked, faithless cynics wanders around in search of transitory wealth, unstable and distracted.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥

ढूंढि विगुचीऐ घर महि वसतु सुथाइ ॥

ਬਾਹਰ

ਟੱਕਰਾਂ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰੱਬ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ।
Searching outside of themselves, they are ruined; the object of their search is in that sacred place within the home of the heart.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਸੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥

मनमुखि

हउमै करि मुसी गुरमुखि पलै पाइ ॥४॥

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹੰਕਾਂਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਘੁਲ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਲਾਭ ਲੈਂਦਾਂ ਹੈ।

The self-willed manmukhs, in their ego, miss it; the Gurmukhs receive it in their laps. ||4||

ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

निरगुणिआरिआ आपणा मूलु पछाणु ॥

ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਤੂੰ ਬਗੈਰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈ। ਜੀਵ

ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਲੀ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀ। ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਦੇ।

ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੋ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣੁ ॥

बिंदु का इहु तनो अगनी पासि पिराणु ॥

ਸਰੀਰ ਔਰਤ ਮਰਦ ਦੇ ਸਯੋਗ, ਦੋਂਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਾਪ ਦੇ ਵੀਰਜ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਖੂਨ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੀਵ ਅੱਗ ਦੀ ਭੇਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
This body is made of blood and semen. It shall be consigned to the fire in the end.

ਪਵਣੈ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੫॥

कै वसि देहुरी मसतकि सचु नीसाणु ॥५॥

ਸਰੀਰ ਸਾਹਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ। ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਭੋਗਣਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੋਰ ਜਿਉਣਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਲੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਰਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਹੁੰਦਾ।
Everyone begs for a long life-no one wishes to die.

सुख

जीवणु तिसु आखीऐ जिसु गुरमुखि वसिआ सोइ ॥

ਅੰਨਦ

ਦਾ ਜੀਣਾ ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਧਾਰ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
A life of peace and comfort comes to that Gurmukh, within whom God dwells.

ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥

नाम

विहूणे किआ गणी जिसु हरि गुर दरसु न होइ ॥६॥

ਨਾਂਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਗੈਰ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਕੀ ਦੱਸਾ? ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਰੱਬ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਹੀ ਨਹੀ।

Without the Naam, what good those who do not have the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of the Lord and Guru? ||6||

जिउ

सुपनै निसि भुलीऐ जब लगि निद्रा होइ ॥

ਸੁਪਨੇ

ਵਿੱਚ ਯਾਦ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੱਚੀਂ ਹੈ, ਜਾਂ ਸੁਪਨਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਰਹੀਏ।
In their dreams at night, people wander around as long as they sleep;

ਇਉ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥

सरपनि कै वसि जीअड़ा अंतरि हउमै दोइ ॥

ਇਸ

ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਮੇਰ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੱਪਣੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਹੈ।
Just so, they are under the power of the snake Maya, as long as their hearts are filled with ego and duality.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਲੋਇ ॥੭॥

होइ वीचारीऐ सुपना इहु जगु लोइ ॥७॥

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਸੱਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਸੁਪਨਿਆ ਭੁਲੇਖਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਹੈ।

Through the Guru's Teachings, they come to understand and see that this world is just a dream. ||7||

मरै जलु पाईऐ जिउ बारिक दूधै माइ ॥

ਅੱਗ

ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬਾਲਕ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਨਾਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
As thirst is quenched with water, and the baby is satisfied with mother's milk,

जल कमल सु ना थीऐ बिनु जल मीनु मराइ ॥

ਜਲ ਦੇ ਕਮਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਪਾਣੀ ਵਗੈਰ ਮੱਛੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
And as the lotus does not exist without water, and as the fish dies without water

परबतु गाखड़ो ना पउड़ी तितु तासु ॥

ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ, ਵੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ

ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲਾਂ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ। ਵੱਡੇ ਉਚੇ ਪਹਾੜ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਖਤਰਨਾਕ ਬਿੰਨਾਂ ਪੌੜੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ।
It is so difficult to climb this high mountain; there is no ladder which reaches up there.

अंतरि जाणिआ गुरि मेली तरीआसु ॥१॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬੱਚ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

But as Gurmukh, I know that it is within my self; the Guru has brought me to Union, and so I cross over. ||1||

ਸੰਸਾਰ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ, ਨਾਂ ਪਾਰ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ।
O Siblings of Destiny, the terrifying world-ocean is so difficult to cross-I am terrified!

ਜੇ

ਮਰ ਜਾਣਾਂ, ਮਰ ਜਾਣਾਂ ਕਹਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਛੱਡ ਹੀ ਜਾਣੀ ਹੈ।
I may say, ""I am going, I am going"", but I know that, in the end, I must really go.

ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਅਮਰੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

आइआ सो चलसी अमरु सु गुरु करतारु ॥

ਜੋ

ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਿਆਂ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਰ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਾਂ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਰੱਬ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Whoever comes must also go. Only the Guru and the Creator are Eternal.

ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥

सचा सालाहणा सचै थानि पिआरु ॥२॥

ਜਿਥੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਉਪਮਾਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਥਾਂ ਨਾਂਮ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਈਏ।

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥

किस

ही नालि न चलिआ खपि खपि मुए असार ॥३॥

ਸਾਰਿਆ ਵਿੱਚੋ ਕੋਈ ਦੁਨਆਵੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣੀ। ਟੱਕਰਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਰਨ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਇਥੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ

ਤੇ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ||3||

-none of these will go along with anyone in the end, and yet, the fools bother themselves to exhaustion with these, and then die. ||3||

सुइना

रुपा संचीऐ मालु जालु जंजालु ॥

ਸੋਨਾ

ਚਾਂਦੀ ਦੋਲਤ ਜਮਾਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਾਲ ਵਾਧੂ ਉਲਝਣਾਂ ਹਨ।
You may gather gold and sliver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement.

जग महि दोही फेरीऐ बिनु नावै सिरि कालु ॥

ਜੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣੂ ਕਰਾ ਲਈਏ। ਨਾਂਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਗੈਰ ਜਮਾਂ ਦਾ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇਗਾ।
You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Name, death hovers over your head.

पड़ै जीउ खेलसी बदफैली किआ हालु ॥४॥

ਸਰੀਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਠੰਡਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮੁਸ਼ਕ ਗਿਆ। ਉਵੇਂ ਮਾੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ?

The husband is delighted seeing his sons, and his wife upon his bed.

चंदनु लाईऐ कापड़ु रूपु सीगारु ॥

He applies sandalwood and scented oils, and dresses himself in his beautiful clothes.

खेहू

खेह रलाईऐ छोडि चलै घर बारु ॥५॥

ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੈ। ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਦਾਂ ਹੈ। ਘਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਲ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਨਵਾਬ ਕਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਹ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਦੇ ਹਨ।
He may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਵਿ ਦਧਾ ਕਾਨੁ ॥੬॥

मनमुखि

नामु विसारिआ जिउ डवि दधा कानु ॥६॥

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜੰਗਲ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਲਵਾੜ ਮੱਚਣ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਾਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

हउमै

करि करि जाइसी जो आइआ जग माहि ॥

ਹੰਕਾਂਰ
ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ।
Whoever comes into the world and indulges in ego, must depart.
