16417 ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
Lakh Lasakar Lakh Vaajae Naejae Lakh Outh Karehi Salaam ||
लख लसकर लख वाजे नेजे लख उठि करहि सलामु ॥
ਜੇ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਫ਼ੌਜਾਂ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਨੇਜ਼ਾ-ਬਰਦਾਰ ਹੋਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਆਦਮੀ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਨਿੱਤ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਣ ॥
You may have thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and lances, and thousands of men to rise and salute you.
16418 ਲਖਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
Lakhaa Oupar Furamaaeis Thaeree Lakh Outh Raakhehi Maan ||
लखा उपरि फुरमाइसि तेरी लख उठि राखहि मानु ॥
ਜੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਕੂਮ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਣ ॥
Your rule may extend over thousands of miles, and thousands of men may rise to honor you.
16419 ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥

जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां सभि निराफल काम ॥१॥
ਜੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਇਥੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਹਨ ||1||
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of your ostentatious show is useless. ||1||
16420 ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥
Har Kae Naam Binaa Jag Dhhandhhaa ||
हरि के नाम बिना जगु धंधा ॥
ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੇ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਲਈ ਉਲਝਣ ਹੀ ਉਲਝਣ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
Without the Name of the Lord, the world is in turmoil.
16421 ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੋਲਾ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਅੰਧੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jae Bahuthaa Samajhaaeeai Bholaa Bhee So Andhho Andhhaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
जे बहुता समझाईऐ भोला भी सो अंधो अंधा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਮਝੋਉਂਦੇ ਰਹੋ। ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Even though the fool may be taught again and again, he remains the blindest of the blind. ||1||Pause||
16422 ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
Lakh Khatteeahi Lakh Sanjeeahi Khaajehi Lakh Aavehi Lakh Jaahi ||
लख खटीअहि लख संजीअहि खाजहि लख आवहि लख जाहि ॥
ਜੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਖੱਟੇ ਜਾਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਜੋੜੇ ਜਾਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਖ਼ਰਚੇ ਭੀ ਜਾਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਰੁਪਏ ਆਉਣ, ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣ ॥
You may earn thousands, collect thousands, and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come, and thousands may go.
16423 ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
Jaan Path Laekhai Naa Pavai Thaan Jeea Kithhai Fir Paahi ||2||
जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां जीअ किथै फिरि पाहि ॥२॥
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਇਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ||2||
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then where will you go to find a safe haven? ||2||
16424 ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
Lakh Saasath Samajhaavanee Lakh Panddith Parrehi Puraan ||
लख सासत समझावणी लख पंडित पड़हि पुराण ॥
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਵਾਰੀ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਲੋਕ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਵਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ॥
Thousands of Shaastras may be explained to the mortal, and thousands of Pandits may read the Puraanas to him;
16425 ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥
Jaan Path Laekhai Naa Pavai Thaan Sabhae Kuparavaan ||3||
जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां सभे कुपरवाण ॥३॥
ਜੇ ਇਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ। ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਢੌਗ ਕੀਤੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਏ ||3||
But, if his honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of this is unacceptable. ||3||
16426 ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
Sach Naam Path Oopajai Karam Naam Karathaar ||
सच नामि पति ऊपजै करमि नामु करतारु ॥
ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੱਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator.
16427 ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥

अहिनिसि हिरदै जे वसै नानक नदरी पारु ॥४॥१॥३१॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਯਾਦ ਰਹੇ। ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ||4||1||31||
If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31||

16429 ਦੀਵਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਲੁ ॥
Dheevaa Maeraa Eaek Naam Dhukh Vich Paaeiaa Thael ||
दीवा मेरा एकु नामु दुखु विचि पाइआ तेलु ॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਦੀਵਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੀਵੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਰੂਪ ਤੇਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥
The One Name is my lamp; I have put the oil of suffering into it.
16430 ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥
Oun Chaanan Ouhu Sokhiaa Chookaa Jam Sio Mael ||1||
उनि चानणि ओहु सोखिआ चूका जम सिउ मेलु ॥१॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਦੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਤੇਲ ਸੜਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਰਨ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਜਮ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ||1||
Its flame has dried up this oil, and I have escaped my meeting with the Messenger of Death. ||1||
16431 ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

लोका मत को फकड़ि पाइ ॥
ਲੋਕੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਉਤੇ ਮਖ਼ੌਲ ਨ ਉਡਾਓ ॥
People, do not make fun of me.
16432 ਲਖ ਮੜਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਏਕਠੇ ਏਕ ਰਤੀ ਲੇ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

लख मड़िआ करि एकठे एक रती ले भाहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਮਣਾਂ ਲੱਕੜ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਇੱਕ ਰਤੀ ਜਿਤਨੀ ਅੱਗ ਲਾ ਦੇਖੀਏ। ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਢੇਰ ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਮ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thousands of wooden logs, piled up together, need only a tiny flame to burn. ||1||Pause||
16433 ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
Pindd Pathal Maeree Kaeso Kiriaa Sach Naam Karathaar ||
पिंडु पतलि मेरी केसउ किरिआ सचु नामु करतारु ॥
ਪੱਤਲਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਨਿਵਜਣਾਂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥
The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony.
16434 ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Aithhai Outhhai Aagai Paashhai Eaehu Maeraa Aadhhaar ||2||
ऐथै ओथै आगै पाछै एहु मेरा आधारु ॥२॥
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ||2||
Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2||
16435 ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥
Gang Banaaras Sifath Thumaaree Naavai Aatham Raao ||
गंग बनारसि सिफति तुमारी नावै आतम राउ ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਸਾ ਕਰਨੀ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਗੰਗਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਂਸ਼ੀ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ। ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ॥
The Lord's Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there.
16436 ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥
Sachaa Naavan Thaan Thheeai Jaan Ahinis Laagai Bhaao ||3||
सचा नावणु तां थीऐ जां अहिनिसि लागै भाउ ॥३॥
ਸੱਚਾ ਇਸ਼਼ਨਾਨ ਤਾਂਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇ ||3||
That becomes my true cleansing bath, if night and day, I enshrine love for You. ||3||
16437 ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
Eik Lokee Hor Shhamishharee Braahaman Vatt Pindd Khaae ||
इक लोकी होरु छमिछरी ब्राहमणु वटि पिंडु खाइ ॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜੌ ਜਾਂ ਚੌਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਟੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੱਟ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਿੰਨੀ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਪਿੰਨੀ ਪਿਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਖੀਰ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਜਜਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰੋਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
The rice balls are offered to the gods and the dead ancestors, but it is the Brahmins who eat them!
16438 ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਕਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਿਖੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥
Naanak Pindd Bakhasees Kaa Kabehoon Nikhoottas Naahi ||4||2||32||
नानक पिंडु बखसीस का कबहूं निखूटसि नाहि ॥४॥२॥३२॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ, ਇਹ ਪਿੰਨੀ ਕਦ ਤੱਕ ਟਿੱਕੀ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ? ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ||4||2||32||
Nanak, the rice balls of the Lord are a gift which is never exhausted. ||4||2||32||

ਰੱਬ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰੱਬ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਇੱਕੋ ਜੋਤ ਹੈ। ਇਕ ਤਾਕਤ ਹੈ। ਇਕ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ॥

देवतिआ दरसन कै ताई दूख भूख तीरथ कीए ॥
ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦਰਦ, ਭੁੱਖਾਂ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ ॥
The Gods yearning for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan suffered through pain and hunger at the sacred shrines.
16442 ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ਭਏ ॥੧॥
Jogee Jathee Jugath Mehi Rehathae Kar Kar Bhagavae Bhaekh Bheae ||1||
जोगी जती जुगति महि रहते करि करि भगवे भेख भए ॥१॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸਾਧ, ਕਾਂਮ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਸ਼ ਵਾਲੇ, ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੇਰੂਏ ਰੰਗ ਦੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ||1||
The yogis and the celibates live their disciplined lifestyle, while others wear saffron robes and become hermits. ||1||
16443 ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥

तउ कारणि साहिबा रंगि रते ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
For Your sake, Lord Master, they are imbued with love.
16444 ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੰਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Your Names are so many, and Your Forms are endless. No one can tell how may Glorious Virtues You have. ||1||Pause||
16445 ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਲਾਇਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਗਏ ॥

दर घर महला हसती घोड़े छोडि विलाइति देस गए ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ-ਬੂਹੇ ਹਾਥੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਤਨ ਛੱਡ, ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਰਾਜ-ਮਿਲਖ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਤਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ॥
Leaving behind hearth and home, palaces, elephants, horses and native lands, mortals have journeyed to foreign lands.
16446 ਪੀਰ ਪੇਕਾਂਬਰ ਸਾਲਿਕ ਸਾਦਿਕ ਛੋਡੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ॥੨॥

पीर पेकांबर सालिक सादिक छोडी दुनीआ थाइ पए ॥२॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪੀਰਾਂ ਪੈਗ਼ੰਬਰਾਂ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨਾਂ ਸਿਦਕੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਛੱਡੀ ਹੈ ||2||
The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world, and became acceptable. ||2||
16447 ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥
Saadh Sehaj Sukh Ras Kas Thajeealae Kaaparr Shhoddae Chamarr Leeeae ||
साद सहज सुख रस कस तजीअले कापड़ छोडे चमड़ लीए ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਸੁਖ ਆਰਾਮ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਛੱਡੇ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਚਮੜਾ ਪਹਿਨਿਆ ॥
Renouncing tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures, some have abandoned their clothes and now wear skins.
16448 ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥

दुखीए दरदवंद दरि तेरै नामि रते दरवेस भए ॥३॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੁਖੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਦਰਦਵੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਫ਼ਰਿਆਦ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੱਣ ਲਈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ||3||
Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3||
16449 ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ॥

खलड़ी खपरी लकड़ी चमड़ी सिखा सूतु धोती कीन्ही ॥
ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੰਗ ਪਾਣ, ਚੰਮ ਦੀ ਝੋਲੀ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਮੰਗਣ ਲਈ ਖੱਪਰ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਫੜ ਲਿਆ। ਕੋਈ ਡੰਡਾ-ਧਾਰੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਣਿਆ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ-ਛਾਲਾ ਲੈ ਲਈ, ਕੋਈ ਬੋਦੀ ਜਨੇਊ ਤੇ ਧੋਤੀ ਦਾ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
Some wear skins, and carry begging bowls, bearing wooden staffs, and sitting on deer skins. Others raise their hair in tufts and wear sacred threads and loin-cloths.
16450 ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹਉ ਸਾਂਗੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੩॥

तूं साहिबु हउ सांगी तेरा प्रणवै नानकु जाति कैसी ॥४॥१॥३३॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਹੈਂ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ||4||1||33||
You are the Lord Master, I am just Your puppet. Prays Nanak, what is my social status to be? ||4||1||33||

लख लसकर लख वाजे नेजे लख उठि करहि सलामु ॥
ਜੇ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਫ਼ੌਜਾਂ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਨੇਜ਼ਾ-ਬਰਦਾਰ ਹੋਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਆਦਮੀ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਨਿੱਤ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਣ ॥
You may have thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and lances, and thousands of men to rise and salute you.
16418 ਲਖਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
Lakhaa Oupar Furamaaeis Thaeree Lakh Outh Raakhehi Maan ||
लखा उपरि फुरमाइसि तेरी लख उठि राखहि मानु ॥
ਜੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਕੂਮ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਣ ॥
Your rule may extend over thousands of miles, and thousands of men may rise to honor you.
16419 ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥

जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां सभि निराफल काम ॥१॥
ਜੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਇਥੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਹਨ ||1||
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of your ostentatious show is useless. ||1||
16420 ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥
Har Kae Naam Binaa Jag Dhhandhhaa ||
हरि के नाम बिना जगु धंधा ॥
ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੇ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਲਈ ਉਲਝਣ ਹੀ ਉਲਝਣ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
Without the Name of the Lord, the world is in turmoil.
16421 ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੋਲਾ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਅੰਧੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jae Bahuthaa Samajhaaeeai Bholaa Bhee So Andhho Andhhaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
जे बहुता समझाईऐ भोला भी सो अंधो अंधा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਮਝੋਉਂਦੇ ਰਹੋ। ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Even though the fool may be taught again and again, he remains the blindest of the blind. ||1||Pause||
16422 ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
Lakh Khatteeahi Lakh Sanjeeahi Khaajehi Lakh Aavehi Lakh Jaahi ||
लख खटीअहि लख संजीअहि खाजहि लख आवहि लख जाहि ॥
ਜੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਖੱਟੇ ਜਾਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਜੋੜੇ ਜਾਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਖ਼ਰਚੇ ਭੀ ਜਾਣ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਰੁਪਏ ਆਉਣ, ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣ ॥
You may earn thousands, collect thousands, and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come, and thousands may go.
16423 ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां जीअ किथै फिरि पाहि ॥२॥
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਇਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ||2||
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then where will you go to find a safe haven? ||2||
16424 ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
Lakh Saasath Samajhaavanee Lakh Panddith Parrehi Puraan ||
लख सासत समझावणी लख पंडित पड़हि पुराण ॥
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਵਾਰੀ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਲੋਕ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਵਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ॥
Thousands of Shaastras may be explained to the mortal, and thousands of Pandits may read the Puraanas to him;
16425 ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥
Jaan Path Laekhai Naa Pavai Thaan Sabhae Kuparavaan ||3||
जां पति लेखै ना पवै तां सभे कुपरवाण ॥३॥
ਜੇ ਇਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ। ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਢੌਗ ਕੀਤੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਏ ||3||
But, if his honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of this is unacceptable. ||3||
16426 ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
Sach Naam Path Oopajai Karam Naam Karathaar ||
सच नामि पति ऊपजै करमि नामु करतारु ॥
ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੱਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator.
16427 ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥

अहिनिसि हिरदै जे वसै नानक नदरी पारु ॥४॥१॥३१॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਯਾਦ ਰਹੇ। ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ||4||1||31||
If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31||

Dheevaa Maeraa Eaek Naam Dhukh Vich Paaeiaa Thael ||
दीवा मेरा एकु नामु दुखु विचि पाइआ तेलु ॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਦੀਵਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੀਵੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਰੂਪ ਤੇਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥
The One Name is my lamp; I have put the oil of suffering into it.
16430 ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥
Oun Chaanan Ouhu Sokhiaa Chookaa Jam Sio Mael ||1||
उनि चानणि ओहु सोखिआ चूका जम सिउ मेलु ॥१॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਦੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਤੇਲ ਸੜਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਰਨ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਜਮ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ||1||
Its flame has dried up this oil, and I have escaped my meeting with the Messenger of Death. ||1||
16431 ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

लोका मत को फकड़ि पाइ ॥
ਲੋਕੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਉਤੇ ਮਖ਼ੌਲ ਨ ਉਡਾਓ ॥
People, do not make fun of me.
16432 ਲਖ ਮੜਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਏਕਠੇ ਏਕ ਰਤੀ ਲੇ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

लख मड़िआ करि एकठे एक रती ले भाहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਮਣਾਂ ਲੱਕੜ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਇੱਕ ਰਤੀ ਜਿਤਨੀ ਅੱਗ ਲਾ ਦੇਖੀਏ। ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਢੇਰ ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਮ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thousands of wooden logs, piled up together, need only a tiny flame to burn. ||1||Pause||
16433 ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
Pindd Pathal Maeree Kaeso Kiriaa Sach Naam Karathaar ||
पिंडु पतलि मेरी केसउ किरिआ सचु नामु करतारु ॥
ਪੱਤਲਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਨਿਵਜਣਾਂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥
The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony.
16434 ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

ऐथै ओथै आगै पाछै एहु मेरा आधारु ॥२॥
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ||2||
Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2||
16435 ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਸਾ ਕਰਨੀ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਗੰਗਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਂਸ਼ੀ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ। ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ॥
The Lord's Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there.
16436 ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥

सचा नावणु तां थीऐ जां अहिनिसि लागै भाउ ॥३॥
ਸੱਚਾ ਇਸ਼਼ਨਾਨ ਤਾਂਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇ ||3||
That becomes my true cleansing bath, if night and day, I enshrine love for You. ||3||
16437 ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

इक लोकी होरु छमिछरी ब्राहमणु वटि पिंडु खाइ ॥
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜੌ ਜਾਂ ਚੌਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਟੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੱਟ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਿੰਨੀ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਪਿੰਨੀ ਪਿਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਖੀਰ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਜਜਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰੋਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
The rice balls are offered to the gods and the dead ancestors, but it is the Brahmins who eat them!

ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ, ਇਹ ਪਿੰਨੀ ਕਦ ਤੱਕ ਟਿੱਕੀ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ? ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ||4||2||32||

ਰੱਬ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰੱਬ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਇੱਕੋ ਜੋਤ ਹੈ। ਇਕ ਤਾਕਤ ਹੈ। ਇਕ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ॥

देवतिआ दरसन कै ताई दूख भूख तीरथ कीए ॥
ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦਰਦ, ਭੁੱਖਾਂ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ ॥

16442 ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ਭਏ ॥੧॥

जोगी जती जुगति महि रहते करि करि भगवे भेख भए ॥१॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸਾਧ, ਕਾਂਮ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਸ਼ ਵਾਲੇ, ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੇਰੂਏ ਰੰਗ ਦੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ||1||
The yogis and the celibates live their disciplined lifestyle, while others wear saffron robes and become hermits. ||1||
16443 ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
For Your sake, Lord Master, they are imbued with love.
16444 ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੰਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

16445 ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਲਾਇਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਗਏ ॥

दर घर महला हसती घोड़े छोडि विलाइति देस गए ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ-ਬੂਹੇ ਹਾਥੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਤਨ ਛੱਡ, ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਰਾਜ-ਮਿਲਖ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਤਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ॥
Leaving behind hearth and home, palaces, elephants, horses and native lands, mortals have journeyed to foreign lands.
16446 ਪੀਰ ਪੇਕਾਂਬਰ ਸਾਲਿਕ ਸਾਦਿਕ ਛੋਡੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ॥੨॥

पीर पेकांबर सालिक सादिक छोडी दुनीआ थाइ पए ॥२॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪੀਰਾਂ ਪੈਗ਼ੰਬਰਾਂ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨਾਂ ਸਿਦਕੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਛੱਡੀ ਹੈ ||2||
The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world, and became acceptable. ||2||
16447 ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥

साद सहज सुख रस कस तजीअले कापड़ छोडे चमड़ लीए ॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਸੁਖ ਆਰਾਮ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਛੱਡੇ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਚਮੜਾ ਪਹਿਨਿਆ ॥
Renouncing tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures, some have abandoned their clothes and now wear skins.
16448 ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥

दुखीए दरदवंद दरि तेरै नामि रते दरवेस भए ॥३॥
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੁਖੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਦਰਦਵੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਫ਼ਰਿਆਦ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੱਣ ਲਈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ||3||
Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3||
16449 ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ॥
Khalarree Khaparee Lakarree Chamarree Sikhaa Sooth Dhhothee Keenhee ||
खलड़ी खपरी लकड़ी चमड़ी सिखा सूतु धोती कीन्ही ॥
ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੰਗ ਪਾਣ, ਚੰਮ ਦੀ ਝੋਲੀ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਮੰਗਣ ਲਈ ਖੱਪਰ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਫੜ ਲਿਆ। ਕੋਈ ਡੰਡਾ-ਧਾਰੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਣਿਆ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ-ਛਾਲਾ ਲੈ ਲਈ, ਕੋਈ ਬੋਦੀ ਜਨੇਊ ਤੇ ਧੋਤੀ ਦਾ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
Some wear skins, and carry begging bowls, bearing wooden staffs, and sitting on deer skins. Others raise their hair in tufts and wear sacred threads and loin-cloths.
16450 ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹਉ ਸਾਂਗੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੩॥

तूं साहिबु हउ सांगी तेरा प्रणवै नानकु जाति कैसी ॥४॥१॥३३॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਹੈਂ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਮ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ||4||1||33||
You are the Lord Master, I am just Your puppet. Prays Nanak, what is my social status to be? ||4||1||33||
